The waters surrounding St Keverne has some of the finest diving opportunities in the United Kingdom, combining rich maritime history with marine biodiversity. The area’s reputation among the diving community stems from its unique combination of challenging wrecks, marine life and the infamous Manacles reef system, which lies close to the shore. This reef, whilst historically claiming many vessels, has created an underwater treasure trove that attracts divers from across the globe.
The Manacles off Porthoustock offer a graveyard of shipwrecks spanning several centuries, each telling its own story of maritime adventure and tragedy. These wrecks have become artificial reefs, supporting thriving ecosystems where brightly coloured marine creatures and plant life flourish just below the surface. Divers can explore these underwater museums while enjoying encounters with friendly seals, who often display curious and playful behaviour around visitors.
Further afield, Loe Bar and Porthleven provide access to a steel ship wreck featuring giant boilers, designated as a protected wreck site that offers both historical significance and exceptional diving experiences. The preservation status ensures these underwater archaeological sites remain intact for future generations whilst providing current divers with glimpses into maritime history.
Kennack Sands offers convenient access to two nearby wrecks, The Carmarthen and The Gunvor, both providing excellent diving opportunities for various skill levels. Meanwhile, Gunwalloe and Church Cove serve as the final resting place for the San Salvador shipwreck, a Spanish vessel believed to have been carrying two tons of Spanish coins when it sank. This wreck has earned the nickname “Dollar Cove” and continues to fascinate divers with its association with lost treasure.
Cadgwith provides access to the wreck of Bellucia, a substantial 4,368-ton British steamer ship that has broken up and spread across a wide area of the seabed. The bows and boilers remain largely intact, offering great diving experiences for those with appropriate qualifications and experience.
